Not so typical lace

In the last decades, the use of lace, this delicate work of art, has outgrown its traditional purpose. Young designers and artist relate their visions of Idrija lace in new patterns, materials and requisites. Thus, Idrija lace is no longer limited to adorning solemn liturgical garments or as home decoration. Its application has outgrown the traditionally set framework.

Idrija lace has become a fashion accessory, and luxurious piece of jewellery. It can be found engraved in glass and ceramic dishes, printed on clothes, painted on the body, or garnishing cakes or coffee.

Rezi Cake won the competition for the festival cake. The organizer of the Festival, the Idrija Heritage Centre, was looking for a dessert made with local ingredients and reminiscent of Idrija and/or lace. A tip for all gourmets: Rezi cake with an adorable sugar lace on top is served in centrally located Škafar restaurant.

Coffee with heart-shaped sugar lace:
Sugar lace is a textile-culinary design project aimed at trying out new ways of relating art. A cup of coffee garnished with lace brings back elements of textile tradition in everyday life. It tries to stimulate people to contemplate in spontaneous interaction the rich Slovenian traditional culture of bobbin lace making. Edible lace is a subtle invitation to sweet gourmet experience. The author of the sugar lace project is Katja Richter, who is realizing her artistic visualisation of copyright sugar lace, and managing the overall image of the project, while conducting an extensive study of edible textile design.

Katja Richter graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering in Ljubljana where she studied textile and fashion design. Currently, she is studying for a Master's degree. With the help of her mentor and professor, MarjetaGodler, she managed to combine her love of textiles, culinary and fine art, and brings them together in the above mentioned project. Sugar lace was first presented at the 34. Idrija Lace Festival in 2015. Visitors to the festival received them with coffee. The sample of lace in the shape of a heart is property of the Idrija Heritage Centre and is used to promote Idrija as a tourist destination.
